This book and course P5: The Five Secrets to Successful Grant and Bid Proposal is for the novice proposal writer who is interested in learning more about the paradigm needed win proposals. This book provides a 40,000 foot generalist view of proposal writing from two of seasoned professionals with over 50 years of experience. Dr. Drakeford and Dr. Hicks simplify the proposal writing process to provide five overarching concepts for effective grant and bid proposals. We believe true scholarship involves the ability for intellectuals to make the complex simple and the haphazard coordinated. It is in this spirit that this book and course uses mnemonic devices, alliteration, music, humor and whatever methods needed to effective communicate highly technical work.

About the Authors

Dr. Derrick Drakeford is a Social Entrepreneur and CEO of Drakeford, Scott, and Associates L.L.C. DSA, LLC consultants have raised over $46,000,000 in grants. Derrick is a former faculty member of North Carolina Central University in the Masters in Public Administration Program and former Director of Freshman Studies at Shaw University. Derrick has consulted with nonprofit organizations, schools, businesses, and churches for fifteen years. He holds a BS in Political Science from Bethune-Cookman College; a Masters in Public Administration from the University of North Carolina's School of Government; a Ph.D. in education from UNC – Chapel Hill; a Certificate in Nonprofit Management from UNC's School of Social Work; Certificates in Proposal Writing and Fundraising for Nonprofits from the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University.

Angela Hicks is a coach, trainer, and teacher who is well versed in proposal writing. She has secured over $20,000,000 in contract and grant funds. Dr. Hicks received her doctoral degree in Leadership, Adult, and Continuing Education from North Carolina State University, specializing in global education, adult education strategies, training, and program development and evaluation. She received her master’s degree in Organizational Development from Bowie State University in Bowie, MD and a Liberal Arts degree from University of Maryland, College Park, MD.
